College of Saint Golias
The College of Saint Golias is a Crown College of the Kingdom of the Outlands, located at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) in Socorro, New Mexico. It is the oldest college in the Outlands and among the oldest registered colleges in the Known World.
Saint Golias is not affiliated with a barony, canton, or shire; its officers report directly to their Kingdom superiors, making it a Crown College. Among members and alumni, it is often referred to simply as Golias. The college’s registered name, Saint Golias, College of, was officially recorded in July 1981, and the name “St. Golias” was grandfathered to the group in 1987.
Patron Saint
The college takes its name from the fictional Saint Golias, a saint invented by 15th-century medical students and remembered as the patron saint of drinking and revelry. The playful spirit of this namesake reflects the college’s tradition of camaraderie, humor, and hospitality.
Heraldry
The device of the College of Saint Golias was registered in September 1987 and is blazoned: Gules, a goblet within a laurel wreath, in chief a bunch of grapes slipped and leaved, all within a bordure Or.
The badge of the Goliard Guard was also registered in September 1987: Azure, a sword bendwise sinister argent between two goblets Or.
Activities and Events
The College of Saint Golias traditionally hosted two major events each year:
- Feast Day of Saint Golias – a movable feast, typically held in October or early November.
- Southern War Practice – the last major war practice for the southern Outlands before Estrella War, usually held the last Saturday in January.
As of 2016, the college also held smaller student-focused gatherings each academic year, including a "Welcome Back" event at the start of the fall semester and a "Farewell Celebration" in the spring. In earlier years, the college hosted a Wassail celebration during the winter break for students remaining on campus.
Members of the college have offered workshops in many arts and sciences, including silversmithing, enameling, blacksmithing, leather tooling, henna design, and metalworking.
Goliard Guard
The Goliard Guard is a pseudo-household formed of college members who have supported the martial efforts of Saint Golias on the field at Estrella War. This includes armoured and rapier fighters, marshals, and waterbearers. Members of the Guard display the badge: Azure, a sword bendwise sinister argent between two goblets Or.
Status
As of July 2021 through July of 2024, the official website of the College of Saint Golias was marked “temporarily on hiatus.”
