			The rank of Herald Extraordinary was introduced in July 1981 for those heralds who have greatly served their College of Heralds and/or the College of Arms and have achieved the highest level of competence in heraldry. The rank has no fixed duties, but instead the holder of the rank is expected to be a senior member of the College who shall lend their heraldic expertise as they see fit. This rank can be bestowed by either Laurel or the Principal Herald of the recipient's home Kingdom.

			Each Herald Extraordinary is expected to have their own personal title that they shall hold so long as they remain active in the Society. Especially in the past, these titles were registered to the Kingdom or to the Society, but currently they are in general registered to the person. Since July 2013, a heraldic title registered to an individual is considered an indication of the rank of Herald Extraordinary.
