Overview

In the Society for Creative Anachronism, the heraldry of location-based branches (such as kingdoms, principalities, regions, and baronies) is required to include a laurel wreath. The laurel wreath is a protected heraldic charge, reserved exclusively for branch arms and for individuals who are members of the Order of the Laurel.

Because non-Laurel members of a barony may not display the laurel wreath, many baronies create a populace badge to allow members of the populace to visibly represent their barony. A populace badge is a piece of registered or traditionally used heraldry that omits the laurel wreath while still clearly referencing the barony.

Populace badges often closely echo the primary heraldry of the branch, using similar charges, colors, or visual themes, while remaining distinct from the official arms. These badges may be worn or displayed by any member of the populace as a sign of affiliation and local pride.
