The Citadel was founded on October 1st, A.S. XVII (1983 CE) while the Outlands was still a principality of the [[Kingdom of Atenveldt]]. The first Baron and Baroness were Sir Jochen von Balduinseck and Mistress Monika von Zell, invested by King Christopher and Queen Constance of Atenveldt. It became the fourth barony to be founded in what would become the Kingdom of the Outlands.
 
The Citadel was once styled "The Gateway to the Crown Lands of Argonia," encompassing all Outlands territory not claimed by another kingdom from the Mexican border south to Tierra del Fuego. Though unofficial, this made the Citadel one of the largest territories in the Known World, in theory.
 
It is the home of several notable firsts in the Outlands, including:

St. Edrik, also known as Edrik Beroldsson, was a beloved figure within the Citadel and the son of Vicomte Berold de Gilbert and the Lady Shala Shalimpour. Known for his large nose and bright spirit, he was widely admired and eventually canonized after his untimely death.
 
He was the first Premier of the Queen's Cypher, squired to his father and later to Sir Conrade, and served the Citadel both on and off the field. After his passing, three miracles were attributed to him, leading to his canonization:
 
An enemy weapon turning into straw during battle
 
An apparition helping free a wagon stuck on a rock
 
A ghostly nose deflecting a blow during a tournament
 
St. Edrik is the Patron Saint of Squires and Children with Extremely Large Noses. His feast day is celebrated every day of the year, with no fasting days. His relics include his dagger, one boot, and signet ring. The Militant Order of the Knights of St. Edrik continues to honor his legacy.

The Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass is a barony within the Kingdom of the Outlands, part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA).
