Overview
In the Kingdom of the Outlands, largesse refers to small, handcrafted or thoughtfully chosen gifts presented within the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Largesse is typically offered to Crown and Coronets, event autocrats, volunteers, or newly-elevated members of the nobility as a gesture of appreciation and support. These items often reflect the giver’s personal craft or regional style and contribute to the atmosphere of generosity valued throughout the kingdom.
Largesse in the Outlands most commonly includes personal items, accessories, and small practical gifts. While any handmade gift is welcome, largesse is usually lightweight, period-appropriate in spirit, and easy to transport.
Largesse Derbies
Many Outlands events host largesse derbies. A largesse derby is a friendly competitions that encourage the production of gifts for the kingdom. Participants usually contribute multiple duplicate items (commonly a set of twelve). These sets are displayed together during the event, and each participant receives one item made by another contributor in exchange for their entry.
Largesse derbies help replenish kingdom and baronial gift supplies, highlight local artisans, and provide newcomers with approachable, small-scale opportunities to contribute.
