The Stag Choir is a kingdom-wide vocal ensemble in the Kingdom of the Outlands devoted to the study and performance of pre–17th-century music. Founded in 2016, the ensemble brings together singers and medieval music enthusiasts from across the kingdom who share an interest in historically informed choral music within the context of the Society for Creative Anachronism.
History
Founding and Early Growth (2016–2019)
The Stag Choir was founded in June 2016 by Elieth de Salazar, who had previously organized a local choir within the Citadel of the Southern Pass known as Calyx Harmoniae. Interest spread quickly, and by July 2016 the ensemble had grown to more than thirty members from across the kingdom.
The choir’s first performance took place at Battlemoor in September 2016, conducted by Duchess Cecilia. Following this debut, the Stag Choir participated in several interkingdom choral activities:
- Joined the Estrella Known World Choir and performed three times at Estrella War 33.
- Sang with the Pennsic Known World Choir in 2019, marking its first participation in a Pennsic-level performance.
Pandemic Hiatus and Virtual Revival (2020–2021)
From February 2020 through March 2021, the Stag Choir remained inactive due to kingdom-wide restrictions on in-person gatherings.
In 2021, the choir reemerged with a new online focus, organizing a year-long series of virtual classes and workshops on medieval and Renaissance music. These sessions were taught by instructors from across the Known World:

- December – Meet the Troubadours by Mistress Magdalen Venturosa
These virtual offerings served as the primary activity of the Stag Choir during a period when in-person attendance at events was still restricted.
Recent Activity (2022–Present)
There are no documented public performances or major activities for the Stag Choir from 2022 through late 2025.
In November 2025, Elieth de Salazar announced a call for participants to perform at al-Barran Midwinter on 20 December 2025, marking the first documented attempt to revive in-person participation since the pandemic.
