Persona

My name is slightly out of sync in time but that fits. I come from York, Jorvik, Eoforwic, Eburacum, Eborakon... the same area but my time changes based on what I'm wearing. I mostly am 13th and 14th century York and adore cotehardies and bycockets. I also love various "viking" inspired garments. Whatever I'm wearing, that's where and when I'm from. Same name. Just call me Lyssa. I am my own grandma.

Master Blackarrow, https://op.atenveldt.org/people/profile/3408, asked me to become his apprentice and bestowed his belt at Estrella XVIII, A.S. XXXIV (2002). Though he has passed from this life, I still wear his belt with pride in his memory. In May of 2007, A.S. XLII (42), I discovered the A&S 50 Challenge created by Lady Albreda from the East Kingdom. You'll find more information on my challenges and progress on my Project Blog. As the anniversary of the creation of the SCA arrived, the A&S 50 Challenge ended. I completed 7 challenges, some several times: Gloves (1 time), Largess (3 times), Classes (2 times), A&S Entries (1 time). In the process I found and hosted the Dirty Dozen Donation Derby (8 times and counting) inspiring artists to contribute more than 3200 pieces to larges, most hand made and all amazing!

I became one of the original Provosts in the Royal Outlands Interkingdom University, and Premier in all of the Student Degrees as well as the Premier Fellow. After 8 years and successfully launching the virtual class program which brought visibility to the university, nearly 25 new degree holders, and helped inspire other universities to embrace the virtual world I left the university to be lead into the next phases by a new board of talented individuals. I earned degrees in the University of Atlantia, University of the Midrealm, University of Artemisia, Royal Outlands Interkingdom University, and continue to work on available degrees in all of those plus University of Trimaris, University of Meridies, Calontir University, and An Tir University.

Missile Arts

  • Centurio Sagitarii Regius -- The Royal Company of Archers; During the reign of Jaxarticus Rex Outlandium and Kathrynque Regina Outlandium. November 2002-May 2003 (This elite company recognized leaders in the archery community. Each leader was specifically asked to be part of this unique and illustrious company. Kathrynque created tabards by her own hand for every member which we may wear anytime, anywhere. 2 of our number are known to have requested to be buried in them which was honored by their family. Lyssa was the only woman recognized in this Company.)
  • Centurio Sagitarii Regius -- The Royal Company of Archers; During the reign of Jaxarticus II Rex Outlandium and Anna I Regina Outlandium. November 2017-May 2018 (This elite company recognized leaders in the archery community. Each leader was specifically asked to be part of this unique and illustrious company. Anna I created hoods sewn and stamped by her own hand for every member which we may wear anytime, anywhere. Lyssa was one of only two woman recognized in this Company.)
  • Principal Kingdom Archery Staff at Estrella War - 2001-2008
  • Outlands Archer General – 1/2017-6/2021 (Third female Archer General) (worked with Raisa Zaplatskaya to research every archery and thrown weapon handbook in the known world to enhance training and resources during the rules revision. It was added to ensure that small groups could begin to create safe and effective programs while working to get marshals trained. Most of the content was later removed from the handbook in a subsequent handbook by those who deemed it unnecessary.)
  • Deputy Archer General – 2008-Present (Many roles from maintaining resources to providing historical information for new captains and AGs.)
  • Archery Authorizing Marshal – 2003-Present (First woman and the only female AAM for a number of years but more women have stepped up as leaders as a result of her encouragement)

  • Skrifari (Secretary to the Archer General) – 2001-2003 (created written guidelines to assist new AG’s to step into the office knowing what they need to know to succeed. The key role of the position is to ensure that those who are poor at communicating and reporting have someone who is good at it to cover the required aspects of the position. Few AGs bother and those tend to cease reporting at all. Complimented by the then Society Archery and Thrown Weapons Officer for consistent and thorough reporting.)
  • Outlands Archery Scorekeeper – 1996-2005 (Processed hundreds of scores each month, encouraging greater participation throughout the kingdom and providing data for the AG and Society Archery and Thrown Weapons Officer each month. A fairly manual process brought from hard copy reporting to email reporting and Excel long before it was on a website that does all the calculation work and before RR participation dropped to less than 100 people each year processing hundreds of scores each month)

  • Hand stitched, designed, and patterned more than 60 pair of White Sharparrow gloves for the holders of the Sharparrow and presentation stock for Their Majesties since May 2003 including a pair for our Queens at the request of Her Majesty Kathryn II during that reign and a pair for our Kings during the reign of His Majesty Tam, both of which were lost when many other items of regalia were stolen in 2022. They can still be seen on the archery.outlands.org website.
  • Hand stitched, designed, and patterned approximately 15 pairs of Red Cadet (Students to Sharparrows) gloves.
  • Created 3 sets of arrows for personal use and a number for others. Teaches the skills to make and maintain arrows.
  • Created a set of 6 atlatl darts and an atlatl.
  • Created shooting gloves, tabs, stringers, slings, bow bags, quivers, hoods, targets, arrow transport cases, arm guards, and various accessories.
  • Created archery hood regalia for Dragonsspine’s retinue and champion. The champion hood features a binding in every color in the Dragonsspine arms. – 2012
  • Created from bow staves one flatbow under the guidance of a mundane master bow maker. Sadly it twisted after about a year of use. He retired before I had a chance to make another. – 1999-2000
  • Patterned and created the Huntsman outfit including hand stitched red and hand stitched black hose and the shoes from Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, August. Very comfortable for field use. The shoes never did work right so I purchased better ones.
  • Dragonsspine Ranger Champion – 2008-2009
  • Dragonsspine A&S Champion – 2018 - Mentioned here because the entry was entirely archery related. Mary Rose Quiver hand stitched with a cuir bouilli arrow divider, two pairs of Ältere shooting gloves from my own pattern tested (one prototype) and revised and improved (one Sharparrow version), one dozen hand made SCA Legal target arrows, leather girdle book cover to hold my authorization cards and authorization information for events all displayed using elements including a children’s bow to demonstrate form and placement while creating elevation in the display.
  • Teaches a variety of classes from arrow making, line safety, skill improvement aimed at women and those who identify on the femme side of the spectrum. Classes and Articles
  • Researched adaptive and safety information through the British Blind Archery Association to assist Lady Ximena Alhaja de Lorca in finding a safe and satisfying way to participate in archery in the SCA. (mid 1990s) Through the implementation of the various suggestions which gave her both comfort and confidence while providing line safety, Ximena became an active and valued member of the archery community.   • Field Marshal Signs – Begun making note of ASL and other signs created by the Deaf/deaf communities of the SCA for use on the martial fields. At this time, there are not enough agreed upon signs for any field and none for archery and thrown weapons but as signs become common and acceptable to the Deaf/deaf communities, my goal is to work with the D/d community to fill in anything we need that’s not been designed for the other martial fields and teach them to marshals and participants in the Outlands to create more welcome and safe spaces within our communities. 2022-Present (DEIB)
  • Created and maintains a Known World Tracking spreadsheet which shows how our activities and cultures look across the known world to assist in education, finding commonalities, and leveraging our differences. Also useful to reduce the number of frequently asked questions which were receiving partial answers across more than a dozen different groups and communities.   • Cooked feast when my co-autocrat and feast head had to cancel due to illness (1986). Fortunately it was a simple feast. Cooked the vegetarian soup option for Crown Tournament in Aarquelle (1986). Recent contributions include Risengrød and Rødgrød med Fløde for Aarquelle Viking Vinter Vonderlandt (2023), a pear tart for a Newcomer’s event (2012), and a spinach and greens redacted quiche (2012). I don’t cook often but I will do it if something catches my interest.
  • Made my first ever drinkable mead at last! Thanks to a virtual mead making class from Baroness Selene Fox out in the West for the class and the advice, I’ve learned mead likes the house much warmer than I do and I’ve been MDKing little yeasties rather than making mead in all previous attempts. It was a beautiful color with an excellent not too sweet flavor. 2025

Service

  • Where's the service section? The majority of the page really. No sense repeating it here when everything I do combines with service.
  • Worked with the College of Heralds to type and encode heraldic commentary for the first online CoH website - 1994 (At the time, there was no software to take the scanned pages and extract the text. This was an entirely manual process.)
  • Created the first online library of documents for the Outlands - 1993 (At the time, documents were held by the officers and finding copies was nearly impossible. It took 5 years to gather them all, sometimes retyping from hardcopy, to make them accessible to everyone.)
  • Created the first website for Dragonsspine - 1993 (This was one of 5 local websites for the kingdom and Duchess Kathryn of Iveragh created the Outlands website.)
  • Served as a commenting herald for the Outlands - 1993-1995
  • Herald at Large 2015 - Present though it keeps dropping off the lists and it’s not worth worrying about since I will always keep my hand in as a herald regardless of rank or status


Other Martial Arts: Combat and Rapier

  • I was a fencer in my second year in the SCA. It wasn't an official activity but folks from another kingdom were teaching in Aarquelle and I started to learn. Loved it!
  • Many fencers refer to me as "grandma" because I trained them or someone who trained them for about 8 years. Then the layers of armor combined with heat and politics added to the stress on my knees made me change activities. I marshalled for a year before realizing it was time to honor self care and find another activity.
  • I learned enough fencing to know I wasn't going to be interested in one-on-one combat. I loved melees much more. I decided to try that. Learned enough to know the basics and be safe.
  • Combined archery with combat and became a combat archer. Loved that more than I did one-on-one on either field. One Estrella found Outlands and Calontir as principal and ally which was a tremendous pairing as they truly appreciate combat archers.

How you would like to be notified in case of court. Also list any other details that would be important for Heralds or Scribes to know, such as your persona's gender identity, or other individuals that should be contacted for details if you prefer to be surprised.

Be kind to the herald. See the pronunciation stuff at the top. Lyssa is the one that's most recognizable when folks mangle pronunciation. Only 2 people in the kingdom consistently pronounce Leofsige correctly. So far I've never once recognized the mangled word as my name.



I don't know how I feel about the new list before the event. Sort of makes me know if I need to bother going or not. Anxiety levels were higher reading it several times so far so I may stop doing that. I prefer the old system but I'll adapt to whatever.

When an individual is selected to receive an award, multiple people will visit the individual's Wiki page to help them plan not only the making of the scroll, but how it is presented.
