Overview

A Shire is a local branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) that reports directly to a Kingdom or Principality, rather than through intermediate branches such as Baronies or Provinces. Shires are typically smaller or newer communities, and they provide a framework for members to participate in SCA activities and develop the branch toward potential elevation to a higher designation.

Definition

According to the SCA Corpora (2025):

“Shire: local branch reporting directly to a kingdom or principality.”

Unlike Baronies, Shires do not have a ceremonial representative (Baron or Baroness), but they maintain a direct line of reporting to the kingdom or principality officers.

Establishment

The creation of a Shire follows the procedures for other local branches:

  • Minimum of five members.
  • Minimum of three officers, including a Seneschal, an Exchequer, and one of the following: Herald, Marshal, or Minister of Arts and Sciences. Branches are encouraged to fill all officer positions.
  • A registered name with the College of Arms.
  • Consensus among local members favoring establishment.
  • Institutional branches (e.g., at schools or military bases) may also operate as Shires, reporting directly to the kingdom, and go dormant if membership drops below five rather than being disbanded.

Once the kingdom Seneschal verifies the petition, the Crown acknowledges the creation of the branch, and the Society Seneschal is notified.

Leadership and Organization

Shires are led by a Shire Seneschal, who manages administrative duties, coordinates events, and serves as the primary liaison with kingdom or principality officers. Other officers may include:

  • Exchequer – manages finances
  • Herald – oversees names, awards, and heraldic business
  • Marshal – coordinates martial activities
  • Minister of Arts and Sciences (MoAS) – promotes educational and craft activities

Shires often host local meetings, practices, and small events. They may collaborate with nearby branches for larger gatherings and can eventually petition for elevation to Province or Barony status as they grow.

Role in SCA Activities

Per Outlands Kingdom Law:

  • Shires may run events on behalf of a Barony, and events do not need to occur within the Barony’s assigned geographic area.
  • Shires are encouraged to waive fees for minors (ages 15 and under) when financially feasible.

Shires provide an accessible entry point for members to participate fully in the SCA, helping grow the community and develop leadership experience within the organization.
