The award could be conferred only one time per reign to any individual, but could be awarded multiple times across reigns. The award was established by the Constitution for the Order of the Mermaid's Grace on October 25th, A.S. XL (2005) by Duncan Alastair MacRae and Mary of Lyonshall attested by Rowland McCain, Black Fountain Pursuivant.[2]

Recipients are entitled to style themselves as Bearers of the Mermaid’s Grace and may place the initials B.M.G. after their names. The insignia takes the form of a stylized mermaid, with the design determined by the Baroness granting the award.
