Seneschal
Overview
The Seneschal is the chief administrative officer of the Kingdom, serving as the primary point of contact between the Crown, the populace, and the Society at large. The office is responsible for coordinating the other Kingdom officers, ensuring compliance with Society governing documents, and supporting the smooth operation of branches throughout the Kingdom.
The term Seneschal is rooted in medieval usage, where it referred to a steward or chief administrator of a household or estate. In the SCA, the Seneschal fulfills a similar role, providing structure, oversight, and continuity to the activities of the Kingdom.
Responsibilities
Per Corpora and Society governing documents, the Kingdom Seneschal’s duties include:
- Coordinating the activities of Kingdom officers to ensure smooth operation of the realm.
- Advising the Crown on matters of law and compliance with Society governing documents.
- Reviewing all proposed changes to Kingdom law, acknowledging them as proper or identifying conflicts in writing.
- Ensuring updated copies of Kingdom law are provided to the Society Seneschal and Board ombudsman.
- Overseeing the establishment and elevation of branches, including compliance with membership and officer requirements.
- Approving border adjustments for groups below the principality level (with Crown approval).
- Ensuring all Society events are properly sponsored, registered, publicized, and compliant with Society rules.
At the Society level, the Society Seneschal is empowered to interpret Corpora, coordinate Kingdom Seneschals, and oversee sanction-related activities.

Outlands Seneschal Roadmap
The Outlands Kingdom Seneschal’s office has undertaken a multi-year roadmap to strengthen administration, training, and resources across the realm.
2023 Accomplishments
- Updated branch seneschal processes (warrants, reports, meetings, office hours).
- Established organizational tree for Battlemoor and dissolved BAM.
- Created resources to make volunteering easier (Demo Handbook, Event Steward Handbook, New Groups Handbook, Storybonding introduction, Kingdom Calendar rotation).
2024 Accomplishments
- Developed Storybonding framework for onboarding officers.
- Finalized Demo Handbook (Jan 2025).
- Expanded resources for volunteers, including bullying flowchart, officer changeover process, and refreshed event bid paperwork.
2025 Goals
- Complete Event Steward resources (checklist, handbook, planning page updates, post-event report).
- Train incoming Kingdom Seneschal with an Outlands addendum to the Society Seneschal Handbook.
- Provide onboarding materials for incoming Crowns (binder of helpful information).
- Begin Outlands history project (video recordings of oral traditions).
2026 and Beyond
Future goals will be shaped by the successes and challenges of 2025, especially Battlemoor. The Kingdom Seneschal and the Crown will also begin the process of identifying a successor for mid-2027.
