Gilbertus is a Norman from the city of Messina in the Kingdom of Sicily. His parents were a minor Norman lord named Coiffus and a daughter of a prominent local merchant, Jālida. They were wealthy enough to guarantee that Gilbertus had access to a good education and comfortable living. However he was the youngest of several sons, so he was destined to a life either as a civil servant or in the church. After spending some time at a monastery in southern Italy, he chose a different path. He escaped the monastery and hopped on a pirate ship that was outfitting for war and was soon to set sail.
