Introduction

Hardwin Godricson (also spelled Godricsson) has been playing in the SCA since June of 2015. He started in the Shire of Nahrun Kabirun, but in August of 2015 moved to al-Barran. He has been involved with several Baronial and royal retinues, and was the bard of al-Barran. Hardwin also held the position of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging officer from March 2023 to August 2024. He was previously Man at Arms to Asfridr Riksdottir, and protege/student to Ymanya Murray. He was the apprentice of Mistress Akilina Iankitova from January 2023 to May of 2026.

Hardwin's main interests are sewing and garb, cooking, medieval "Bushcraft", embroidery, death and funeral customs, and bardic.

Persona

Lord Hardwin Godricson is an 11th-century Anglo-Saxon craftsman and former member of the Varangian Guard, portrayed as living in Constantinople during the late 11th century. His persona explores the material culture of the period and the interaction between Anglo-Saxon and Byzantine traditions.

Hardwin was born in approximately 1048 to a family of timber-thegns in the Somerset Levels. As the younger son, he was trained primarily in practical crafts rather than governance, developing skills in timber construction, shipbuilding, embroidery, and silk work. Following the Norman Conquest, he participated in the English resistance before leaving England for the Byzantine Empire.

After arriving in Constantinople, Hardwin joined the Varangian Guard, where he applied his experience as a builder and craftsman to the repair and construction of fortifications, siege equipment, and other structures. He later established himself as a master builder in Constantinople, incorporating Anglo-Saxon timber-framing techniques into Byzantine architectural forms. His work also extended to textile production, particularly embroidery and silk weaving.

His persona emphasizes the practical realities of an itinerant craftsman, with particular attention to the weight, construction, wear, and repair of clothing and personal equipment. His garb and projects draw on 11th-century Anglo-Saxon and Byzantine material culture, including textile work, woodworking, and the construction of a ring pouch inspired by the Fiskerton sword hilt.
