Overview
Fjolverkr & Melissa served as the 73rd reign of the Outlands. Hailing from Unser Hafen, Fjolverkr earned the title of Crown Prince at the Fall Crown Tournament, AS LVIII (2023) which took place in the Citadel of the Southern Pass. Fjolverkr and Melissa were later elevated on January 20th AS LVIII (2024).[1]

Controversy and Removal from Throne
It has been reported that Fjolverkr and Melissa were approached by the royals of another kingdom while attending an out-of-kingdom war. During that conversation, their attention was drawn to Guy of Castle Kirk, a longtime participant in the SCA.
For several years, Guy had been constructing Castle Kirk.[3] He was well known in his local community both for the project itself and for hosting events at the site. Castle Kirk has been the subject of differing opinions and criticism regarding its construction methods, materials, and appearance. Critics have cited the use of rebar, poured concrete, and a metal roof as elements they consider outside the bounds of period construction.[4]
Based on personal accounts, it is unclear whether Guy was interested in or actively pursuing elevation to the Order of the Laurel. It has been alleged that the royal who approached Fjolverkr and Melissa was familiar with his work and suggested that they extend an offer of elevation. In Caid, candidates for the Laurel must be submitted by the Crown, voted upon by the Order, and receive at least a 75% affirmative vote.[5] No comparable polling requirement exists in the Outlands; there, the Crown must notify the Laurels of their intent to present an offer. It is not known how many times, if any, Guy of Castle Kirk had been submitted to the Caid Laurels or with what result.
SCA corpora does not permit the elevation of a gentle who resides outside the kingdom making the offer. When Fjolverkr and Melissa decided to proceed, steps were taken to address this restriction. According to reports, they worked with the Crown of Caid to draft a “citizenship treaty,” under which Guy would formally renounce fealty to the Crown of Caid and swear fealty to the Crown of the Outlands, thereby becoming an Outlands subject and eligible for elevation.[6]
It has been alleged that Guy’s name was mentioned only briefly prior to the offer being presented in court, and that both the mention of his candidacy and the offer itself were the first time many members of the Outlands had heard of him. It is further alleged that both his offer and elevation were scheduled prior to the consultation of the Order.[7] He did not reside in the Outlands nor regularly participate in its events. His elevation generated significant controversy and backlash, particularly on social media. Discussion focused on questions of eligibility, the relationship between the Crown and the Order, and the nature and merit of Guy’s work.
Following the elevation, the matter was brought before the Board of Directors for review. On July 1, 2024, the Board ruled that the citizenship treaty was nullified, Guy’s elevation was revoked, and Fjolverkr and Melissa were removed from the throne. Their reign was declared unsuccessful. The decision took effect immediately.[8]
