2023 Theft of Royal Regalia and Kingdom Response
Summary
In April 2023, several items from the collection of the Royal Regalia of the Outlands were stolen in a residential burglary. The theft prompted a widespread response across the Kingdom and the Known World, with efforts made to replace the lost artifacts and preserve the traditions they represented.
The Incident
In early April 2023, an Outlands Kingdom officer’s home in Westminster, Colorado, was broken into. During the burglary, multiple pieces of Kingdom regalia were stolen, including:
- The Coronets of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess (with storage box)
- The original Kingdom Signet Rings
- The Royal Scepters
- The Great Seal of the Outlands (with storage box)
- The Prince’s Mace
- Various tabards, banners, white scarfs, and Sharparrow gloves
A public announcement was made to the populace, urging vigilance, especially among those in northern Outlands, and requesting assistance in recovering the items. Comments indicated that several personal, mundane items were also stolen, but no further detail was given.
Community Response
Mistress Matilda de Seton was appointed Regalia Replacement Coordinator and provided regular updates. On April 12, 2023, she reported that none of the stolen items had been recovered. However, preparations for Crown Tournament were underway, and temporary or permanent replacements for some items were commissioned swiftly. A call for bids was announced, with preference given to Outlands artisans.
The Kingdom received an outpouring of support and material assistance from across the Known World.
Replacement Efforts at Crown Tournament
During Crown Tournament in the Barony of Fontaine dans Sable (April 22–23, 2023), Their Majesties announced several updates regarding regalia replacements.
Replacements Presented
- Princely Coronets: Baron Robert de Tyre (of the Middle Kingdom, formerly of Caer Galen) commissioned new coronets crafted by THL Christoff of Swampkeype (East Kingdom). The design echoed the original three-point shape and included malachite cabochons.
- Prince's Mace: A replacement mace was gifted to the Crown by Mistress Keridwen Gwennmarch. The mace originally belonged to her late husband, Baron Douglas MacAndrew (KSCA, OL), former Baron of Caerthe. It had been housed in his personal library for years and was known to many as a symbol of his hospitality and wisdom. The handle was reworked by Master Massimiliano. Transport was arranged by Baroness Hannah.
- Princely Banners: Countess Nerissa and Duchess Conal, Ladies of the Rose, created new banners for the Crown Prince and Princess, featuring personalized heraldic details.
- Royal Scepter: Later in 2023, Mistress Matilda, with the assistance of Baron Max of Caer Galen, created a new scepter to replace one of the lost items.
Outcome
Despite continued vigilance from the populace and local authorities, none of the stolen regalia was ever recovered. The replacements created in their stead reflect the deep devotion of the Outlands and its allies to preserving royal tradition and honoring the past.
