Royal Regalia of the Outlands
Overview
The Kingdom of the Outlands maintains a rich and symbolic collection of royal regalia. These items are entrusted to the Crown and its officers during reigns, ceremonies, and major events such as Coronation. Each piece reflects the Kingdom’s values, history, and deep traditions. Some items currently in use are replacements for regalia lost or retired over the years.
The Ancient Crowns of the Outlands
The Ancient Crowns are constructed of copper with a brass overlay, divided into five pointed sections. Each section is decorated with leaping stags in a Celtic motif, centered with a malachite stone.
These Crowns are rarely used and are reserved for significant occasions—most notably Coronation. Their design matches that of the Royal Axe Thunderhead and the Sword of State Lightning, forming a visual and thematic set. The Crowns were a coordinated effort by Kathryn of Iveragh and a team of five or more artisans.
Note: These Crowns are replacements for the original Royal Crowns that were lost.
Thunderhead, the Great Axe
Thunderhead is the oldest surviving piece of Outlands regalia, created by Master Zoltan Kovacs (Kirby Wise) during the principality reign of Prince Gunwaldt. It has been carried by every Prince and King of the Outlands since.
In Coronation ceremonies, it is called the “Voice of Tradition and mighty in Lore.” The outgoing King entrusts the axe to a member of the Chivalry or the Warlord. It is then presented to the new King, symbolizing the traditions and counsel of the Chivalry when the Peerages are called.
Lightning, the Sword of State
Also made by Master Zoltan Kovacs, Lightning bears the same motifs as the Ancient Crowns. It represents the King's justice and might.
The sword is traditionally given by the outgoing King’s Champion to the rightful heir. The King’s Champion carries the sword in court; if unavailable, the King may appoint another knight to bear it.
The Signet Rings
The Signet Rings were created by Master Waltari, Premier Laurel of the Outlands. They are carried in a custom bag crafted by THL Etain of Durham, which features the Drygestani "blasted tree."
They are typically presented by the Pelican chosen by the outgoing Crown. During their transfer, the new Crown may be charged to “guard well the peace and foster unity throughout Your Realm.” At the Coronation of Johann III and Monika, the rings were described as a “symbol of (the Crown’s) Marriage to the Realm.”
Note: These Signet Rings are replacements for earlier regalia that were lost.

The Great Seal
The current Great Seal was made by Master Waltari and later repaired by Master Tore. It is a symbol of justice, equality, and the administrative authority of the Kingdom. It is entrusted to a member of the Order of Defense.
Note: This is the second Great Seal of the Outlands. The original was given to Jarl Gunwaldt and Countess AElflaed by King Cameron and Queen AnneAliz when the replacement was completed.
The Sceptre
The Sceptre symbolizes the Arts and Sciences and is passed by a member of the Order of the Laurel during Coronation. The Crown is traditionally charged to “foster the growth of courtesy and chivalry throughout all Your lands.”
Note: The current Sceptre is a replacement for an earlier version lost in the 2023 theft of royal regalia.
Tempest, the Queen’s Champion’s Spear
Tempest is the current weapon of the Queen’s Champion. It replaced a ceremonial axe named Sunshine—crafted by THL Angus Montgomery the Forrester—which was retired in A.S. LIII.
The spear was presented to King Béla IV and Queen Anna. It was wrought by Eorl Muiredach MacGregor and Master AElric Kyrri in the shop of Master Raymond the Quiet. The shaft bears an inscription in Anglo-Saxon runes:
“Swift as wind, I AM TEMPEST.”
The inscription was done by THL Akilina Ianikitova.
The Queens' Gloves
The original pair of Queens' Gloves were created by THL Lêofsige Õ Caoimh during the reign of King Maelgwn II and Queen Cainnleach. They were made to show the dedication of the archery community and express gratitude to the Queens of the Outlands for their patronage of the orders of the Sharp Arrow and the Golden Pheon.

The gloves are crafted from white pig suede, lined with gold silk, and hand-stitched with white silk. They are embellished on one hand with a hand-beaded badge of the Grant Level Sharp Arrow and on the other with the badge of the AoA-level Golden Pheon. They also incorporate gold and white tassels. A unique design feature includes a button and loop on opposite sides of each glove, allowing them to be fastened together. This allows a Queen to wear them over a belt, displaying one of the two badges, or over the white scarf when it is worn on the bicep rather than over the shoulder.
During the presentation at Crown tournament in March 2002, each member of the Sharp Arrows present was introduced in court: THL Ian Lindsey MacRae, Master Duncan MacRae, THL Steitan Bogenschütz, THL Damian d'Antioche, Baron Daniel Larke del Glen, THL Eric Morrison of Thistlekeep, THL Ailinn Shadowfox, and Sir Rand the Tracker of Oak Hollow. The names of those not present were also mentioned: Baron Peregrine Elric of Courtenay (premier), Master Thorfinn Greybeard, Sir Tam Grimm, Baron Caomh Beathan Crubach, and THL Ashikaga no Toshihiro. These individuals were presented as leaders within the archery community, serving as guides and inspiration for aspiring archers.
The gloves are worn by every Queen of the Outlands as part of the royal regalia.
The original gloves were stolen in the 2023 theft of royal regalia and have not been recovered.
