Overview

Battlemoor XIII was the thirteenth annual Battlemoor, the premier camping event of the Kingdom of the Outlands. Held July 2–6, 2025, at the Sporleder Centennial Ranch near Aguilar in Aarquelle, the event took place during the reign of Zachariah & Mariana and featured martial tournaments, arts and sciences, classes, revels, merchanting, and camping. The event's theme was Invasion.

Wildlife

Battlemoor XIII experienced a series of encounters with local black bears that ultimately resulted in the event being closed early on the evening of Saturday, July 26, 2025. Bear sightings began early in the week and were initially managed in coordination with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife department using a variety of mitigation measures, including relocating some camps and applying bear deterrents. As the week progressed, officials determined that at least six bears, including a sow with adolescent cubs and a large male, were frequenting the area.

During Grand Court on Saturday evening, a large male bear was spotted on the perimeter of the event, within site of those assembled for court. After consulting with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Society and Kingdom Seneschals, event leadership determined that they could no longer ensure the safety of attendees and ordered an immediate evacuation of the site. Attendees were instructed either to pack their camps and depart or leave their equipment in place and return after 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the time designated by Colorado Parks and Wildlife as safe for re-entry. Individuals who were unable to drive safely were instructed to remain overnight in locked vehicles, while event staff and volunteers stayed on site to assist with the evacuation and monitor those remaining.

Although the event concluded earlier than planned, all official courts and scheduled kingdom business had been completed prior to the evacuation. Kingdom officials later stated that the bears' unusual behavior was attributed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife to a combination of environmental factors outside the event's control.

Controversy

Thursday night's revel was originally planned as a party hosted by and themed around the Sisterhood of the Holy Hatch Green Chile. After announcing and beginning to promote this revel, an semi-anonymous member of the Outlands populace commented on a promotional facebook post, expressing their distaste for the theming. The post was quickly deleted by the request of the Kingdom Seneschal and theming subsequently changed to a Monty Python themed revel with a significant emphasis on salsa.
