The Crown of the Outlands refers to the reigning Monarchs of the Kingdom of the Outlands. They are the ceremonial and administrative heads of the Kingdom, serving as the embodiment of its honor, justice, and inspiration. Traditionally styled as King and Queen, the titles are gender-neutral in meaning, and apply to any pair of Sovereigns who ascend by right of arms through the Crown Tournament.
The Crown rules by the will of the people through combat at Grand Outlandish in the Spring and Crown Tournament in the Fall. The location of Crown Tournament rotates between local groups. Upon victory, the heirs are styled Crown Prince and Crown Princess (or appropriate titles), and ascend as Sovereign and Consort at Coronation. They are responsible for holding court, creating and confirming awards, overseeing officers, and representing the Kingdom to the Known World.
Retinue and Champions
The following are traditional positions within the Royal Retinue of the Outlands. These positions serve to support and honor the Crown throughout their reign.
King’s Champion – Chosen by the King. Historically, the second-place finisher in Crown Tournament, though the tradition changed during the reign of King Artan V.
Queen’s Champion – Chosen by the Queen. Formerly determined by a heavy weapons tournament at Coronation until changed by Béla V and Anna.
Blue Iris Herald – The Queen’s Herald, serving as the court herald for the duration of the reign.
Princess Protector – Winner of a rapier tournament typically held the day after a Coronet Tournament.
